Ants, is not enough for you to start buying canned food only?
Remember to watch ants as a kid? Remember, they always travel on two lines – one that goes "home" to a food source, and one from the food source for "house"?
These ants do not succeed, they follow a scented path. As the ants move far from their point of origin, they leave a residue pheromone guiding them back.
Like Hansel and Gretel bread crumbs idea, the pheromone of ants keep getting lost. It also gives them a "road" trip back to any food they find.
If you destroy the "road" you remove the pheromone and the ants on the side leaving your point of destruction lost. They can not find their way back. You also force the ants at home to start new research for food because they do not know where the last anymore.
Once you hinder their quest for food, it is time to attack the colony, and get rid of this nuisance. The problem is that if only 10% of the colony survives your attack, only 10% can not build a new settlement equal to the size of the original … and larger.
Invasions of ants that makes it difficult to control. Certainly, they will disappear for a while during the reconstruction of the colony, but keep a watch for them, because after a season or two they returned, and you must launch a new attack.
By the way, you do not know how distinguish an ant from a termite? They look almost exactly alike, but have two major differences:
- The ants have a "pinched" waist. Think of the body measurements of a woman of 36 – 24 – 36. The ants were the size of 24 inches. Termite bodies are still full length, they do not have a "pinched" waist.
- Ants have "elbow" (or shift) in their antennae. Termite antennae are straight.
Keeping the above criteria in mind saves you the frustration and worry when you see a swarm and the need to identify quickly the type of insect it is.
Speaking of swarm is now the right time for me to explain what I mean by that word.
Both ants and termites are swarming seasons. It is their time of mating. Members of the breeding colony out all at once. This resembles often a sudden cloud of bugs.
Reproductive ants have wings and fly normally to a source of light when they leave the colony. If the colony is under the floor inside your house or inside a wall, you see these winged ants gathering around a window.
The ants mate and the males die. Females return to walls, floors or to make new colonies.
Not all species of ants come to light when they swarm. Even still, be aware of this possibility and be prepared to identify the insect you invade your home.
Having the ability to distinguish between these two species of insects saves you the pain of ulcers as you know you are just looking at an ant.
