To many of us, Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze is the embodiment of the psychedelic era. Songs like All Along The Watchtower, Voodoo Chile, Red House, Fire, and Stone Free are just some of Jimi Hendrix’s most sought after recordings.

Born in the middle of the World War II turmoil in Seattle Washington, Jimi Hendrix strangely became popular in Europe first before hitting it big in the American shores. His young mom, only 17 at the time of his birth, left him in the care of her friends in California. After the Second World War, his dad being discharged took him in his care and changed his name to James Marshall Hendrix. Jimi and his family, his dad together with his two brothers and two sisters experienced dire financial hardships. To top this, one of his brothers was handicapped and they were forced to have him be under state care. His two sisters were given up for adoption, the first one was born blind. And Jimi was exposed to a mishmash of ethnic races in high school because he was forced to study in a public institution – his African American brothers, Asian Americans, and European Americans.

His dad’s friend sold him his very first guitar for five dollars when he was fifteen and that is what started it all in Jimi’s musical career. Come 1959, his father bought him his very first electric guitar, a white Supro Ozark. Since then, he was able to practice his signature moves that made him very famous – playing the guitar using his teeth, playing the guitar behind his back, and the duck walk which he copied from Chuck Berry, another African American rock and roll great. But Jimi Hendrix’s major influence was The King himself, Elvis Presley, whom he witnessed perform in Seattle, Washington. His early influences though were B.B. King and Muddy Waters, both blues performers.

Jimi Hendrix undoubtedly was a very remarkable person not only because he had a colorful life as a famous guitarist but also as a private citizen. He was drafted in the military, had issues with love and race claiming to have been expelled in school for holding the hands of a white American classmate. An African American rock performer in world where majority of those who become famous are white, Jimi Hendrix defied the norm and was touted, actually is still branded as the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music. To keep the 70’s atmosphere alive, Jimi Hendrix vinyl albums should be played. Reminiscing the psychedelic era would be more meaningful with the vinyl sounds of Jimi Hendrix songs such as Machine Gun, Little Wing, and The Star-Spangled Banner, and of course Purple Haze.
