The Gold Rush, the 1925 silent film comedy, is generally considered best known film of Charlie Chaplin. Throughout the history of cinema, both film critics and viewers have always considered this film to be a Chaplin True Hollywood comedy classic of the silent era.
It tells the story of the equally famous and beloved Chaplin character of a little tramp "(known as The Lone Prospector in this film) as he travels to Alaska, in hopes of taking part in gold rush Great Alaska. Instead, as luck and bad weather would have it, he finds himself alone in a cabin Backwoods distance with another prospector and an escaped fugitive for now.
Finally, when the disappearance of the weather, 'The Lone Prospector' Out for again rejects a gold medal near the community of art. While there, he takes the work of tending the booth of another prospector, and is falling in love with Georgia, a saloon girl, he assumes, wrongly love too.
Although known as a great comedy, this film is also rich in social satire, the drama and emotional tenderness.
The film features a number of scenes that include the famous Chaplin character prepare dinner Thanksgiving for himself and another stranded and starving prospector by boiling and eating a shoe leather (supplied by the American Society of licorice) and his shoelaces as they were noodles. In another, the occupants of cottages scramble to exit the cab swaying dangerously on the edge of a cliff before falling into the valley.
A famous sequence, widely considered one of Chaplin's most memorable career The Lone Prospector shows entertaining guests Eve his imaginary New Year dinner, piercing two rolls with forks and make them dance as if they the legs were a real dancer. This scene was recreated in a 1994 episode of The Simpsons, entitled "Lady Bouvier's Lover. "
The classic comedy is always appreciated by the public today, and ranks as the fifth largest revenue silent film, and the highest grossing silent film comedy of all time.
The film was released again in 1942 by Chaplin, with a strong narrative and a musical score that has been said by Chaplin and arranged. He also tightened the editing to reduce the film running time has changed some elements of history minor, and deleted the kissing scene at the end of eliminating a subplot, where the character is pushed to believe that Georgia loved. This new version has been a huge success world wide.
In 1992, The Gold Rush was selected to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. This film is a must for anyone interested a classic Hollywood comedy of the silent era.
