Collecting Vinyl Records
Most of the youth nowadays don’t know what a vinyl record is. Before the magnetic tape and digital CD technologies were put into market, there was a flat disk made from a petroleum-based plastic called vinyl. So before CD, this is the preference of media for population music production. CDs and DVDs use the DVD player to operate, while vinyl records used the phonograph to play the songs. Vinyl records do not break easily, but because it is made of soft material, it can scratch easily. Vinyl attracts dust which is difficult to remove and for this reason it readily acquires a static change. The cause of audio clicks and pops of vinyl are the dust and scratches. The scratches of the record can cause the skip over a sequence of grooves, or worse yet, it can cause the needle to skip backwards, and producing a “locked groove” and the needle can move to the next groove so that part of the music will repeat over and over again. Aside from the scratches and dust, vinyl records can warp if exposed to hot temperature. That’s why the vinyl is placed in a container made of hard carton which shouldn’t be exposed to sunlight. The phonograph or the turntable is used to play the vinyl record.
Since the latest technologies now like CD, DVD, MP3, MP4 and several others are used to store music nowadays, vinyl records now belong to the collectible items. There is a wide of selection of artists and titles in Rock, Jazz, Soft Music, country, blues, and doo-woop from the 50’s through the 80’s, and because of the scarcity of the records, there are no more available in the market. If there is any, prices could be very expensive or the prices could be fluctuating in the market. To buy a vinyl record for collection could take a lot of consideration aside from the price it includes the authenticity of the records. The more valuable and rate the record, the higher the price.
The collectors will really venture into buying these items the vinyl records. For some collectors, they collect the old vinyl records because it is an enjoyable hobby, and restores a part of their youth. For others, collecting vinyl records is for passion. For them the sound of vinyl is more appealing and most enjoyable. Comments heard from the collectors are vinyl has a warmer sound and they love the experience. According to them, the vinyl records have the clearness and clarity of the music compared to newer technologies.
Some expensive collections of vinyl records are the albums of Elvis Presley, the Beatle Mania, Frank Sinatra, the old songs of Michael Jackson, and others. The collectors are always alert for garage sale of these rare albums, some came from friends who needs money and sold the albums. Some collectors used the internet and browsed websites for any advertisement on collectible vinyl records for sale.
